West Sixth Brewing announced it will open a small taproom in downtown Lexington next to Sunrise Bakery at 109 West Main Street. Here’s more, straight from the official announcement:
It will be called The West Sixth Greenroom, and once all the permitting goes through, it will be complete with its own nanobrewery inside. This will allow us to brew specialty beers just for the Greenroom on a smaller scale — and to do more fun experimental beers we can’t currently do at our existing facility. It’s an intimate, warm, shotgun style place – the side kick to the main brewery a few blocks north… our “Greenroom”. We can’t wait for you to see it!
While we weren’t actively looking to open a taproom in downtown Lexington, when Kristy and Steve at Sunrise approached us with this opportunity, we knew it wasn’t something we could pass up. Sunrise has been a partner with us since day one, and Kristy and Steve are kind and generous people. Between the tasty things they’ve baked on that block for years, there are some amazing things brewing with the opening of 21c, and (knock on wood) active construction hopefully beginning across the street. It will give us a great location to help celebrate all the amazing festivals in downtown Lexington, and will also be a great opportunity to showcase Lexington craft beer to all of the tourists and convention goers who don’t ever make it out of downtown.
We’re going to start simple with it — we’ll be open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from late afternoon until past midnight. We’ll have some basic food options available at all hours from Sunrise and some other partners downtown, and will be actively working with Lexington food trucks as well. We’ll have a curated list of West Sixth beers that will be available both in pints and to-go. Unfortunately, unlike our main taproom, until we receive our microbrewery license (approximately 5 month wait time for federal permitting), the West Sixth Greenroom will not be legally allowed to be family-friendly.
We’re also thrilled that this additional space will allow us to do more private events. We’re constantly getting queries about events, and unfortunately our main taproom isn’t always conducive to those events. Even more, we want to offer up the space when we’re not using it to local nonprofits and other organizations looking to do good in our community. If any of these fit your needs, please get in touch.
Things are moving quickly: we’re shooting to be open for Lexington Craft Beer Week in May. Construction is in full swing, with the bar already halfway built and much work already complete. West Sixth Brewing announced today the release of the newest beer in their specialty line of seasonal cans – the Snake Eyes Imperial Stout.
“We’re very excited to release this next beer in our seasonal line ” said West Sixth co-founder Ben Self. “We’ve made Snake Eyes since our first year in 2012 – releasing it each winter. It’s always a crowd favorite”.
Snake Eyes Imperial Stout is brewed with many roasted malts, with flavor hints of chocolate, coffee and a touch of caramel sweetness, making up an exceptional flavor profile. A high ABV stout, it’s sure to take the chill out of the air.
“Everyone at West Sixth loves malty stouts – and we make quite a few different varieties” said brewer and co-founder Robin Sither. “Snake Eyes always rises to the top every year”.
“Snake Eyes Imperial Stout takes its name from the strength to which it’s brewed – ending up at 11% alcohol by volume”, said co-founder Brady Barlow. “It’s also the beer we have the most fun aging in bourbon barrels to make beers like Snakes in a Barrel and Snake Cake”.
As with all West Sixth cans, the can design was created by Brian Turner of Lexington-based Cricket Press.
“Similar to the Heller Heaven Double IPA release earlier this year, we’ll be releasing this beer for a short run in limited quantities” said co-founder Joe Kuosman. “Once it’s gone, it’s done for the year.”
Snake Eyes Imperial Stout will be available in 4-packs of cans and on draft throughout Kentucky and Cincinnati, OH beginning on January 4th, 2016.

West Sixth Brewing announced today the latest beer in their seasonal series: the DankeChain Oktoberfest. It will be available in cans throughout their distribution area beginning in August.
Following the Belgian Blonde and Heller Heaven Double IPA seasonal, this beer is the perfect one to enjoy as summer begins winding down and Oktoberfest season begins. It’s a traditional German-style lager that’s moderate strength and malt-focused.
“We’re really excited about this version of our DankeChain Oktoberfest” said head brewer and co-founder Robin Sither. “We first released this beer for our Oktoberfest celebration the first year we opened and have continued to improve on it through a series of experimental batches”.
The beer is named DankeChain in reference to FoodChain, the non-profit indoor aquaponics farm next door to the brewery. They have been a partner with West Sixth Brewing since the beginning, using the spent grain from the brewing process to grow tilapia and a variety of vegetables in a sustainable manner.
As with all of the West Sixth labels, this one was designed by Brian Turner of Lexington-based Cricket Press. Brian said: “We wanted to give a nod to the traditional colors and imagery of the Bavarian flag, which is synonymous with all things Oktoberfest, but also add in the fun illustrated elements associated with the season and the beer style.”
Co-founder Brady Barlow said “We’re particularly excited to release this beer in order to have it available for all of the great events we’ll be at this fall. From the Woodland Art Fair and Crave in Lexington, to NuLu Fest in Louisville, to Zinzinnati Oktoberfest in Cincinnati, you’ll see this beer everywhere”.
The beer will be available throughout West Sixth’s distribution area in kegs and cans beginning in August. Cans will be sold in a 6 pack, 12 ounce can set.

First, we announced the next beer in our county series: Mercer County. It’s a blend of Belgian Tripel and Berliner Weisse that we aged in beautiful white oak Mezcal barrels. Finished with lime zest, this beer is perfect for the summer, and we recommend you drink it now rather than let it age! The name is inspired by the cooperage history of Shaker Village – while not created in Kentucky, the Mezcal barrels are beautifully hand-crafted! It goes on sale next Tuesday at 5pm in the taproom, only 400 bottles are available (limit 1 per person).
Second, we announced our Summer Open House on Saturday, May 30th at 3pm. If you missed our first one, don’t miss this one. West Sixth Brewing announced today the next beer in their seasonal series: the Heller Heaven Double IPA. It will be available in cans throughout Kentucky in June.
The first beer in their seasonal series, the Belgian Blonde, “Went over incredibly well”, said West Sixth co-founder Joe Kuosman. “The Blonde was a great spring beer, easy drinking in the warm weather. We’re really excited, though, for the Heller Heaven Double IPA to make its debut, because it’s been one of the most popular beers in our taproom since the beginning”.
“We’ve been making this beer from the very beginning of West Sixth” said brewer Robin Sither. “Filled with Amarillo and Simcoe hops, and weighing in at a full 9% ABV, it’s a craft beer lovers’ Double IPA”.
Co-founder Brady Barlow said, “Heller Heaven is a crowd favorite because of its strong hop notes accentuated by its dry hopping. It’s not a beer for the faint of heart! Despite its hoppiness, it has a good malt sweetness to bitterness balance, with bold citrus and floral notes.”
The beer is named after Lexington artist Sarah Heller, who was one of the initial artists present in the Bread Box Studio Artists space next to West Sixth Brewing. She was instrumental in the launching of the brewery, and designed and built a giant mural on the side of the brewery made from recycled building and bicycle parts and dripping paint.
The label was designed by Brian Turner of Lexington-based Cricket Press. Brian said: “The can design is a nod to the characteristic paint drips found in the artwork of the beer’s namesake. We went with black and blue because it’s a brew that packs a wallop.”
The beer will be available throughout West Sixth’s distribution area in kegs and cans beginning in June. Cans will be sold in a 4 pack, 12 ounce can set.

West Sixth Brewing announced today the start of a new series of seasonal canned beers that will be released in limited quantities throughout 2015.
The first beer in the series will be the Belgian Blonde. This beer will be available around March 1st for 3 months, or until supplies run out. 2 other seasonals are planned for later in the year.
This beer, known in the taproom as the Bryan Ave Belgian Blonde, is light in color, but deep in flavor and aroma with hints of spiciness that come from the Belgian-style yeast that is used when brewing the beer. It finishes moderately dry with just enough hop bitterness to balance out any remaining sweetness.
“We’ve got several hop-forward beers in our lineup, as well as several that are malt-forward, so it will be fun to have a beer that really focuses on the yeast – which is sometimes the most under appreciated ingredient in any beer”, said head brewer Robin Sither.
“We’re really excited to be able to offer this beer on a larger scale than just in our taproom” said founder Brady Barlow. “It’s been consistently a top seller sinceit’s a beer anyone can enjoy – from a true craft beer aficionado to someone just starting to appreciate a full flavored beer.”
The label, which is different from many of the other West Sixth offerings, features an orange and yellow Kentucky farm scene. “Since this Seasonal release is West Sixth’s take on the classic Belgian Blonde style – our can design is meant to reflect the warm tones of Spring with rolling hills and the promise of good stuff growing up from that rich Kentucky soil.” said designer Brian Turner, of Cricket Press, who designed the new can.

- The First West Sixth Open House – think of this as a tour on steroids! On Saturday, January 31, we’ll be opening up the entire brewery from 4-7pm and highlighting some great beers. This is your first chance for a behind the scenes in-depth look at how we make the beer at West Sixth. Explore the brewery space, chat with our staff-bartenders, packaging, brewers, owners -and enjoy some special beers we’ll be rolling out for the event. We’ll be pouring these beers in all sorts of unique ways – directly from the tanks, sampling aged beers straight from the bourbon barrel, and trying a can fresh off the canning line – which will be running especially for the event. Called “Nicholas County”, it’s a special edition West Sixth Christmas Ale aged in Bourbon Barrels
Lexington, KY – December 8th, 2014
West Sixth Brewing announced today the next bottle in its limited edition “West Sixth County Series” – Nicholas County.
A celebration of Christmas, Nicholas County is a small batch of West Sixth Christmas Ale aged in Bourbon Barrels for several months.
“The bourbon character really plays well with the spiced characteristics of the West Sixth Christmas Ale” said brewer Robin Sither.
“We think Santa Claus will make a lot of people happy this year by delivering some Nicholas County under the tree – after all, who doesn’t want beer for Christmas?” said founder Brady Barlow.
This beer is a celebration of a Kentucky Christmas. The base beer is our West Sixth Christmas Ale, a dark spiced ale with aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg and a sturdy malt backbone. We’ve aged this beer in a Kentucky Bourbon barrel, which imparts a vanilla and bourbon overtone to the already existing spice character. Strong and Warming, it weighs in around 11% ABV, which should keep you merry even in the coldest of Kentucky nights.
Availability of Nicholas County will be extremely limited – only 235 bottles will be available.
These beers will go on sale next Monday, December 15th, at 5pm. Bottles will be $15 and will be limited to one bottle per person since supplies are so limited.

Today, we’re excited to announce the return of one of our fan favorites: the West Sixth Christmas Ale!
Last year, we launched this in very limited quantities, and it was a wild success! We sold out of almost all of the beer in just 24 hours.
This year, we’ve been planning further ahead, so we’ve been able to make a bit more of it – but based on last year, we have no idea how long it will last!
We’re going to release the Christmas Ale on draft and in 6-packs on Monday November 17th at 4pm in the taproom. It will also be available at retailers around the state and in Cincinnati.
We’ll have special giveaways for our launch, so you aren’t going to want to miss it!
For those who didn’t get a chance to try it last year, the West Sixth Christmas Ale is a spiced ale with aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg with a sturdy malt backbone that will hold up to the chilliest of nights.

West Sixth Brewing announced today the creation of a new series of limited edition beers called the “West Sixth County Series”.
“We’re excited to announce a new project here at West Sixth — the West Sixth County Series! For the first time ever, we’re going to release a series of small-release bottle conditioned beers celebrating the unique qualities and character of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.” said founder Ben Self
West Sixth plans to release around 3 different beers each year, in extremely limited quantities, each named after a different Kentucky county.
West Sixth Brewing head brewer and co-founder Robin Sither said “The first beer of our series is American Wild Sour Ale we’re calling Washington County. Nearly a year in the making, the base beer for this ale is a blend of berliner weisse and saison, with secondary fermentation provided by our friend Brettanomyces lambicus in a used red wine barrel. Tart, crisp, and funky, it weighs in around 7% ABV with high effervescence created during the bottle conditioning.”
Founder Brady Barlow said, “Being the first in our series we’ve named this wild ale after Washington County, the first county created in Kentucky after our fair Commonwealth was founded. There are only 225 750ml bottles available, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.”
The limited edition bottles feature labels designed in partnership with Cricket Press. Each bottle was hand-bottled and hand-labeled and is individually numbered. The label features a cut of the state on the back.
These beers will go on sale next Monday, October 13th, at 5pm. Bottles will be $20 and will be limited to one bottle per person since supplies are so limited.
